"10,000 steps per day" has been considered a health standard for a long time, but the latest study published in The Lancet pointed out that 7,000 steps per day is enough to bring obvious health benefits, and the increase in benefits beyond this number is limited.

The research team analyzed a number of existing data and found that compared with only 2,000 steps per day, the death risk of 7,000 steps decreased by 47%, the risk of cardiovascular disease decreased by 25%, the risk of dementia decreased by 38%, the risk of falls decreased by 28%, the condition of depression decreased by 22%, the type 2 diabetes decreased by 14%, and the cancer decreased by 6%. Although there are still benefits to taking more than 7,000 steps, the improvement is relatively small.

Asim, a specialist in internal and cardiology Cheema pointed out that the concept of 10,000 steps originated from the marketing activities in Japan in the 1960s, which was too high for many people, while the 7,000 steps was lower, which could still significantly promote cardiovascular health, mental health and prolong life. This research breaks the myth of "one thousand steps is necessary" and is closer to the living conditions of ordinary people, making it easier to achieve.

However, the research does not require 7,000 steps to be the new standard, nor does it mean that 10,000 steps are useless goals. Hannah Arem, president of science at MedStar Health in the United States, said that if you only take 4,000 steps in normal times, it will be effective if you increase it to more than 5,000 steps; reaching 7,000 steps will further benefit, while the additional benefits of more than 7,000 steps are limited, but still exist.

Matthew Badgett, a physician at Cliffland clinic, supplemented the benefits will be normal after the activity reaches a certain level, but the improvement from 2000 steps to 7000 steps is the largest. If we can move from 7000 steps to 10,000 steps, although the harvest is smaller, there will still be health benefits. He reminded that this study should not lower the goal of those who originally took 10,000 steps a day, but the key is to find the amount of movement they can maintain for a long time.
