BBC: Australia may be sacked after losing to Chelsea. Forest is interested in Marco Silva, Dyche and Cooper
BBC reported that Nottingham Forest coach Postkoglu is facing a crisis of dismissal.
As the new head coach of Nottingham Forest, Postkoglu once again faces a severe test. Since taking over from Nuno 38 days ago, he has taken charge of seven games but failed to register a victory. It is therefore no surprise that Postkoglu could be sacked if another defeat against Chelsea on Saturday results in his fourth defeat in five Premier League games.
It is understood that the club has begun looking for a replacement and has conducted in-depth discussions during the international competition. While all clubs have contingency plans for various situations, Postkoglu's poor performance at the City Stadium and the dissatisfaction with him among some fans have made these preparations even more concrete. Nottingham Forest appear to be looking for a manager who can play pragmatic football or at least adopt a more balanced approach, rather than insisting on an attacking style like Postkoglu. However, it begs the question as to why Nuno was sacked in the first place, after he successfully guided the team to European competition and used the exact style of tactics that Forest now want to see.
Eventually, behind-the-scenes tensions made Nuno's position at Forest almost untenable. However, now they are looking for a coach with similar philosophy to Nuno, which is ironic.
Fulham head coach Marco Silva is one of Nottingham Forest's targets, with sources saying he is City Stadium insiders' first choice. Silva, who worked with Forest boss Evangelos Marinakis at Olympiacos, helped Fulham gain a foothold in the Premier League through his pragmatic tactics. However, Silva is under contract with Fulham and according to BBC Sport, his contract has a "huge" release clause.
Considering that Nuno’s compensation has just been paid and Postkoglu may need to be compensated, Forest are obviously unwilling to spend large sums of money to hire Silva, especially if he can join for free after his contract expires at the end of the season.
Given the difficulty of attracting Silva, Nottingham Forest is also considering the cost and feasibility of other options. According to sources, the possibility of reappointing Steve Cooper has also been considered. Cooper led Forest back to the top flight in 2022, but was replaced by Nuno in December 2023. However, Cooper has recently been appointed head coach by Danish club Brondby.
Nottingham Forest are reportedly considering appointing former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche. Dyche has extensive experience in maintaining the team's Premier League status and his tactical style is in line with Forest's goals. Furthermore, Dyche lives near Nottingham and is currently on a free agent after leaving Everton earlier this year.
The 54-year-old Dyche was once a member of the Nottingham Forest youth academy, and his assistants Ian Vaughan and Steve Stone have also played for the club for many years. These factors make Dyche a very good fit. If Nottingham Forest formally express interest in Dyche, it is uncertain whether the two parties can agree on contract terms.
Considering that this will be Forest's fourth head coach since their promotion to the Premier League in 2022, it is conceivable that the new coach will want higher protection in the contract to prevent being fired.
Given the previous cost of sacking Nuno and paying Postkoglu's release clause, Forest may not be willing to make another major financial commitment within the same season. This may create some complexity for the next appointment, but it is not insurmountable. For Postkoglu, he will face tremendous pressure. Still, he believes he can turn things around. Likewise, club owner Marinakis hopes he will succeed, as he believes Postkoglu's ability to win trophies was one of the important reasons why he chose the coach in the first place.
Before the last game against Newcastle, sources revealed that despite the 0-2 loss in that game, Postkoglu still received the support of Marinakis. However, the outcome of this game and the way it plays out will have a big impact on how Marinakis sees Postkoglu's future.
In addition, Postkoglu seemed to be affected by the referee's penalty. For example, in the Europa League match against Midtjylland earlier this month, there were views that as many as 14 key decisions were made against Forest, leading to fans expressing their dissatisfaction with Postkoglu.
Despite this, the internal scrutiny Postkoglu faces is still very strict. This weekend's game against Chelsea will be his chance to prove himself to the club's hierarchy. If he can win, this may be the first step towards regaining his confidence; on the contrary, if he loses the game, his coaching position will be in jeopardy.
