Hangzhou s first stray cat, Xiaomei, was snatched by a publicly paid stray cat, who was snatched by a Hangzhou girl born in the 1980s
There are now about 300,000 stray cats in Hangzhou. According to the fact that one cat lives for 15 years, two children a year, and four children a year, the total number of stray cats in Hangzhou will exceed one million in a few years. Currently, the only way in the world that has been scientifically proven to effectively control the number of stray cats is called TNR (Trap trap, Neuter sterilization, Release release). Not long ago, the Hangzhou Municipal Government invested 300,000 yuan to officially launch the stray cat community sterilization project, and selected five animal hospitals as designated hospitals for sterilization surgery in the main urban area.
Yesterday, the reporter asked these five hospitals one by one and learned that a yellow and white stray cat had undergone government sterilization surgery on October 1. This little female cat has a nice name - "Xiaomei". Xiaomei's sterilization surgery also marks the official implementation stage of the Hangzhou TNR project.
The one who trapped Xiaomei was a Hangzhou girl named Xiaoqiu
Xiaomei was 6 months old and was very beautiful, with big and round eyes, and her eyes were like green gems. At 9 pm on September 30, he was successfully trapped by Miss Qiu in Zuoan Garden Community. He underwent sterilization on October 1 and is expected to be discharged from the hospital on October 10.
Director Li Hui from the Lishui Branch of Yunlai Pet Hospital said: "Xiaomei's wound heals quite well. She started to have infusions, and now she can eat canned cats. Originally, Xiaomei could be discharged from the hospital after 5 days of art. Considering that she wore a protective ‘Elizabeth collar’ on her neck, it may affect her foraging in the wild, so she kept it for a few more days."
Yesterday evening, Xiaomei lay quietly in the cathouse of Yunlai Pet Hospital. As soon as the person approached, the cat's hair stood up, his throat made a long "ha" sound, his eyes were sharp and he was alert.
The doctor who cared for Xiaomei said, "This is a cat warning, no one is close to you. Xiaomei has a hot personality and is a 'hot girl'. If she can successfully trap it, it can definitely be used as a model."
The one who trapped Xiaomei was Miss Qiu, a native of Hangzhou, born in the 1980s, who has been lovingly rescuing stray animals for more than ten years and is a volunteer of the Hangzhou animal protection team.
Yesterday, Miss Qiu politely declined the interview. She said: "It is the social responsibility of citizens to send stray kittens for birth control, and there is nothing to say..."
But when it comes to the methods and steps of catching Xiaomei, Miss Qiu is very happy to share it with others. "The community of stray cats needs everyone's attention. Stray cats endure multiple tortures of hunger, pain and disease. They will fight each other due to food poverty and estrus, and it is easier to spread disease..." Miss Qiu, who originally had a soft voice on the phone, spoke faster, and talked in detail about the whole process of catching "Little Beauty" - Four steps to successfully trap
Step 1: Select a community to understand the number of stray cats and the areas where they often appear.
Miss Qiu said that there are about 30 stray cats in the Left Bank Garden, and they often move in the bushes. Miss Qiu’s friend has the habit of feeding stray cats. Every night at around 7 o’clock, Xiaomei would walk around the bushes where she was feeding.
On the evening of September 30, Miss Qiu and her friends received a trap cage from the pet hospital and placed it next to the bushes where stray cats often appear. Previously, they specially stopped feeding for 48 hours (Miss Qiu said that the hunger the cat, the easier it is to trap it, but the plan to stop eating should not exceed 3 days. Xiaomei's belly was shrunk when she was caught, and she must have been very hungry at that time).
Step 2: Prepare very attractive food.
This time, Miss Qiu used chopped chicken shells bought from the vegetable market as bait and scattered them near the trapping cage. When Xiaomei smelled the fragrance, she first took a bite of the chicken shell from a distance and slowly approached the trapping cage bit by bit. The largest chicken shell was placed in the cage. Xiaomei hesitated for a while, and finally couldn't resist the temptation of delicious food, so she entered the trap cage.
Step 3: Cover the mystery of the pedal with newspaper.
Once the cat steps on the pedal (the trapping cage mechanism), it will be locked in the trapping cage. But many smart cats will find the mystery of the pedal and not get close to it. Miss Qiu first covered the pedal with a single newspaper and then spread food on it. Sure enough, Xiaomei was "scamd".
Step 4: A piece of old bed sheet covers the cage to keep the cat quiet.
Cats suddenly locked in a cage and usually struggled desperately. Xiaomei was also shocked that day, and the cage was clattering. Miss Qiu's friend took out an old bed sheet prepared in advance and quickly covered it on the cage. In the dark environment, Xiaomei quickly calmed down (Miss Qiu said that this is a cat's habit).
At 10 pm, Xiaomei was placed in the underground garage of the community by Miss Qiu for a night. The next morning, Xiaomei and another black and white kitten "little cow" successfully trapped were sent to Yunlai Pet Hospital together. Xiaomei had the surgery first, and the little cow had the second one.
Miss Qiu accompanied them to undergo the operation, and carefully talked with Dean Li Hui about the post-operative situation before leaving reluctantly. She and Dean Li agreed that early on the morning of the 10th, they would pick Xiaomei back to Zuoan Garden Community and put it back into the familiar place.
How to successfully trap a stray cat?
Miss Qiu said that in the past, she often went to catch stray cats with friends from Hangzhou Animal Protection Organization and sent them to the hospital for sterilization at their own expense. "It's great that the government has taken this matter back now!" Miss Qiu said that they had failed to trap many times in the past, and later they slowly accumulated some experience. After successfully trapping, they need to pay attention to the following matters:
Prepare a long rope (in case the automatic mechanism of the trap cage fails, they can also be manually operated through the rope).
Prepare disposable straps or thin wires to reinforce cages or doors.
Prepare containers for canned foods and other foods.
Prepare a pair of thick gloves. White yarn gloves are useless, and it is best to be leather gloves to prevent being scratched by cats.
Stray cats are very vigilant, try to avoid connecting with the cat's sight to avoid making the cat more vigilant.
When stray cats first enter the cage, they must restrain themselves no matter how excited they are. To ensure that the environment is quiet. If someone walks around or makes other noises, the cat will be frightened and will not enter the cage for a long time, and will even escape if it goes in.
Cats with strong personalities will struggle in the trapping cage and often break the mouth, nose, corners of their eyes, etc., so they must transfer the cat to a cloth bag or air box as soon as possible and send it to the pet hospital as soon as possible. Once the automatic door of the professional trap cage falls, it is generally relatively strong. However, it cannot be ruled out that some cats with great strength can still be pushed open. Therefore, it is best to transfer the cat to a cloth bag or an ordinary cage as soon as possible after catching it.
Usually, a trap cage can only catch one or two cats at a time. Whenever you catch one, you will immediately transfer it to a cloth bag, and then immediately disinfect the trap cage to remove the smell of the previous cat in the trap cage.
You can also fix the mechanism of the trapping cage first, so that the cat can enter and exit and eat freely, and then let the mechanism go when they relax their vigilance.
